Oh, Italy, you have stolen my heart!
When Caleb’s brother visits us in Germany, we do all of the travelings! This past week, we explored a little bit of Milan and a lot of Rome! If I had to pick one to go back to, it would definitely be Rome. We have so much more to explore in this historical city.
Our adventure began with our 9-hour drive to Milan. It was supposed to take 6.5 hours, but traffic was not on our side that day. But, we finally made it! One of the most impressive things in Milan is the Duomo di Milano. A beautiful cathedral with so much detail! I’m always in awe of how these buildings were made! We walked around A LOT, as Caleb documented on his watch, we walked 15.3 miles in one day. My feet were definitely sore afterward.
The following day, we headed off to Rome! This time, I was driving and once we reached the city, all traffic laws went out the window! There were zero lanes, and if you did see the faint lines on the road, no one followed them. People on Vespas wove in and out of traffic without a care in the world. It’s a miracle there aren’t more accidents! So, word of advice, avoid driving in Rome if possible.
Aside from the driving, the city itself is beautiful! Our Airbnb was a few minutes walk from the Vatican, so of course, we explored that first and then wandered around the city taking small backroads and randomly finding an open art gallery.
The next day, we went to the Colosseum and learned all about it! It was quite fascinating! I’m not one for tours, but this one was worth it. And, my most favorite spot of all was the Roman Forum! Talk about taking a step back in time! I didn’t feel like I was in a modern world anymore. History everywhere you looked. If there is one thing that I think is a MUST SEE, it’s definitely the Roman Forum!
Lastly, I can’t forget about the Roman Aqueducts! That was our last stop before heading home. It was a massive park and a less touristy spot. I’m a sucker for those hidden gems!
